In case of a loss it is important to be prepared. Keep proof of your valuables in a firesafe box or in a digital format. Be sure to include photos, receipts and other details. TDI provides a Property Checklist for the Consumer, to make it easy to keep an updated list of your property. The better you document your property beforehand with pictures, receipts, and other evidence, the more likely your claim will be processed smoothly.
When the time comes, you will be asked to supply detailed information regarding your loss. Be thorough and honest. To support your claim, it may be necessary to supply some documentation. Pictures of your tree atop the neighbor's garage, details on your personal property destroyed in a fire, and so forth. If you should experience damage from a covered peril of your policy, you can make temporary repairs to prevent further damage to your property. Remember to keep all receipts for your claims adjuster, and do not sign any deals with contractors or lawyers until you have spoken with your independent insurance agent.
Remember, it is important to keep your property well maintained and use qualified professionals to update or change the roofing, heating, electrical, water heater(s), and plumbing systems in the home when needed. Multiple claims or claims arising out of poor maintenance may adversely affect your insurance.
Any person who knowingly presents a false or fraudulent claim for the payment of a loss is guilty of a crime and may be subject to fines and confinement in state prison.
